| Who owns the protest? NC, Cong spar over | | INDIA bloc agitation against CEC in J&K | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 10: Even as constituents of the INDIA bloc continue to hold protests across Jammu and Kashmir against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the ruling National Conference (NC) appears unwilling to give its coalition partner, the Congress, credit for the agitation. In response to a call by the INDIA bloc, joint protests have been under way for the past three days in different parts of the Union Territory under the leadership of the Congress, demanding the CEC’s resignation. Highly placed sources said the NC leadership has taken serious note of what it sees as an attempt by the Congress to hijack the protests and project itself as the only party seriously opposing the policies of the BJP-led Centre. According to the sources, the Congress is seeking to cash in on anti-BJP sentiment in the Kashmir Valley. “By creating such an impression, the Congress is trying to expand its base in Kashmir Valley at the cost of the ruling National Conference,” the sources said, adding that the NC leadership has recognised the game plan of its coalition partner. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc held large protests in Srinagar and Ganderbal districts on Saturday, demanding the CEC’s resignation and a transparent investigation into alleged deletions from the voter list. In Srinagar, opposition leaders attempted to march outside the Congress headquarters but were stopped by authorities from proceeding. Leaders and activists of the alliance took part, demanding accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI) and a thorough probe into the alleged deletions. The protests form part of the INDIA bloc’s campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have criticised the exercise, expressing concern that eligible voters may be left out of the lists. Protesters demanded a review of the revision process and restoration of names allegedly removed without justification, arguing that such deletions could violate voters’ rights. Opposition leaders also stressed the need for transparency in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls, urging election officials to investigate the allegations and take corrective measures wherever irregularities are found. The allegations have been made by opposition parties, which have sought greater accountability from election officials over the revision process. In Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, the INDIA bloc also took to the streets and staged a protest pressing the same demand. |
