| Mohan Lal Bhagat inaugurates Rs 1.53 crore flood protection work at Chak Sikander | | | Early Times Report AKHNOOR, Nov 4: MLA Akhnoor Mohan Lal Bhagat on Wednesday inaugurated flood protection work at Chak Sikander along the Chenab river, being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.53 crore under the SASCI scheme by the Flood Control Division, Akhnoor. The project aims to protect vulnerable areas from soil erosion caused by the rising water level and strong currents of the Chenab. The work will involve construction of crate revetment along the right bank of the river to prevent further erosion and safeguard adjoining agricultural land. Speaking on the occasion, Mohan Lal Bhagat said that several villages in the Akhnoor constituency face the serious problem of land erosion whenever the water level in the Chenab rises. Hundreds of kanals of fertile agricultural land have already been washed away, causing substantial losses to farmers. He said that while the present project would provide relief to the affected area, the permanent solution lies in the construction of strong concrete embankments along both banks of the Chenab and its scientific channelisation. Bhagat reiterated his commitment to pursuing the issue with both the Central Government and the Jammu and Kashmir Government. He said he was continuously making efforts to secure a comprehensive and permanent solution to the recurring problem. He further pointed out that proper channelisation would not only protect existing agricultural land but could also help reclaim hundreds of kanals of land from the riverbed for productive use. This, he said, would benefit farmers, promote development and generate substantial economic gains for the government. AEE Sanjeev Singh, Mandal President Jourian Neeraj Sharma, Daler Singh, Rocky Mahajan, Rakesh Bhagat, Babu Ram and Gullu Ram were among those present on the occasion. |
