During Navratra, Jawans deployed outside slaughter house in Kashmir

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 14: The recent establishment of polling booth inside slaughter house in downtown here has drawn severe criticism from security forces, whose jawans were put on duty at the "controversial site" during Navrata when Hindu people remain away from non-vegetarian meals.
Reports said the government had established the polling booth at slaughter house at Rainawari for elections for municipal corporation held on October 13. Officials said the booth was meant for voters from Ward 41 (Makhdoom Sahib locality).
The paramilitary CRPF jawans who were deployed at the booth for election duty allegedly had reservations to enter the slaughter house as they wanted to be away. "We are forbidden to get even close to non-vegetarian things during Navratra. The authorities should have avoided keeping electoral facility at such an objectionable place," said some troopers on the condition of anonymity.
The area residents said they saw many of the paramilitary troopers vomiting in the locality as they were feeling annoyed to guard a slaughter house during Navratra.
Some of the policemen also made similar complaints saying that many of their jawans were "finding it awkward to be posted at slaughter house for election duty.
Sources said a complaint in this regard has reached Raj Bhawan with many saying that it was for the first time that the polling facility was established at a slaughter house.
The locals said polling booths were generally established at the nearby office of the Power Development Department.
However, the officials downplayed the matter. "We had got the place cleaned and no sheep were slaughtered at the site on the day of polling, so there was nothing objectionable," said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Officials said the security agencies had themselves recommended that venue for polling as it was found comparatively safer. "The booth was established in accordance with the security inputs, so there was nothing deliberate," the official said.
