| PDP receives jolt as NC President rules out any alliance for next assembly elections in JK | | Party ideally wanted same so that there is some face saving | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Dec 7: In a major disappointment for the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Conference (NC) today announced that the party would go alone in the next assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir.
The announcement in this regard was made by none other than NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The announcement is being seen as a jolt to PDP that is battling crisis within its fold these days. Two of the party legislators have already deserted the party ranks with one among them joining yet another political outfit.
Ruling out any alliance in the ensuing elections to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, NC President today said after voting to power, his party's government will grant regional autonomy to various regions of the state.
Dr Farooq said that NC will not forge any alliance with any political party in the next assembly elections and exuded confidence about massive mandate from the people. He said that people have realized the crucial need of strong and stable government in the state to meet various challenges confronted to it. He said the government on crutches cannot deliver, which has been proven many a times.
The denial of NC to forge any alliance with PDP is bound to upset the applecart of the party that was once considered to be very good alternative to the National Conference. Ideally the PDP leaders would like NC to join hands with them so that there is some face saving for the party at the end of the day.
It would be in place to mention here that PDP, NC and Congress had staked to form the government in the state on November 21. However, the same could not mature as Governor Satya Pal Malik dissolved the assembly in the evening of November 21.
The three parties had joined following reports that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) might join hands with Sajad Gani Lone led Peoples Conference and some dissidents from PDP and form the next government in the state. Lone had also faxed a letter to the Governor about the government formation but too he could not form the government.
Following the dissolution of assembly, PDP leader and former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pattan, Imran Raza Ansari formally resigned from the party and joined hands with Sajad Lone. Imran's uncle Abid Hussain Ansari who represented Zadibal in the previous assembly may desert the party any time since he too raised a banner of revolt against the party leadership especially party President Mehbooba Mufti.
PDP received yet another jolt on Thursday as former finance minister and former MLA Rajpora, Haseeb Drabu resigned from the party. Drabu had been dumped by his party after he had said that Kashmir problem is a social problem and not a political problem as said by political parties including his party.
If reports are to be believed there are chances that many PDP leaders are all set to leave the party and join some other political outfits that are carrying out their activities in Jammu & Kashmir. As such it can be said that PDP is all set to disintegrate in the coming weeks. |
