Insufficient facilities, infrastructure affect healthcare in SMGS

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 1: The only child-Maternity hospital in Jammu, SMGS does not have sufficient equipments and infrastructure to provide quality healthcare to growing footfall of patients.
Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospital is overburdened with the patients as there is no other Child-Maternity hospital in the winter capital. Even after the frequent deaths of children in GB Pant hospital in Srinagar last year, the SMGS authorities had reviewed all their arrangements and facilities in the hospital and claimed that the incidents like GB Pant hospital would not happen here, But the fact is that the GB Pant hospital has more facilities, equipments and infrastructure as compared to SMGS in Jammu.
Astoundingly, SMGS is accommodating 750 patients even though it has the capacity of 550 beds.
"Two to three patients are accommodated on a single bed, staff is scarce and nobody is bothered about the patient," said Dharam Pal, 42, an attendant with a patient.
"When the condition of the patient become critical, then only the staff pays attention," he added.
The SMGS in Jammu has only one Neonatal Ventilator in the hospital, while the GB pant hospital in Srinagar has 5 Neonatal Ventilators with them.
SMGS officials said, "We do not compare our self with Kashmir, of course they have more infrastructure, but we always try to give our best to the patients, and I can assure that the incidents like GB Pant will not happen here in Jammu."
He further accepted that they have lack of equipments, staff and infrastructure in the hospital. On the issue of the Neonatal Ventilator he said, "We don't have trained staff here, we are sending staff to Srinagar for training and then we will buy some more ventilators for the hospital."
"We don't even have one bed per thousand of the population and other States have 10 beds per thousand of the population," he added.
He said that they are sending the lists of their requirement from time to time to the Government but the processes of approvals, funding and other things takes time.
SMGS Hospital has capacity of 550 beds and houses Gynaecology, Pediatrics, ENT and Dermatology Department which have been upgraded with more beds, creation of Neo-natal ICU and facilities for Microscopic Surgery and Phototherapy unit. In SMGS Hospital on an average 1200 patients per day attend various OPDs, 100 patients per day are admitted, 60 Deliveries including C.S/Day, 60 major/minor operations are performed per day, about 20 ECGs, 65 ultrasounds/X-Rays per day and about 1000 tests (pathology/bio/micro) are conducted in various labs.
