SRINAGAR, Sept 2 : The irresponsible approach of authorities concerned in maintaining the sanitation of picturesque Dal Lake had nowadays taken its toll on tourists as the foul smell emanating from the heaps of extracted weeds placed on trendy Boulevard Road had forced them to vacate houseboats and stay at lodges and guest houses. A group of tourists who had spend huge amount to visit Kashmir especially Dal Lake feel disheartened once they had a glimpse of the banks of Dal Lake at Boulevard Road as the foul smell emanating from the heaps of extracted weeds changes their perception about the paradise on earth. The accumulated weeds and garbage along the banks of Dal Lake have started to emanate pungent smell as the Lakes and waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) has turned a blind eye towards the cleanliness of Dal that too when the tourist season was on its zenith. “Dal Lake is the face of Kashmir. If this lake is not taken care of then the whole tourist industry in a very short span would be on the verge of extinction,” Devesh Chakaraborty a tourist form Kolkatta told Early Times. “Believe it or not I choose to stay in house boat since I reached here as the heaps of garbage and weeds along the banks you can see form Foreshore Road to Nehru Park has given a shabby look to this great lake,” said Devesh. The unbridled growth of obnoxious weeds coupled with accumulation of tons of garbage has irked the tourists a lot as one can only close his nose while walking through the banks of Dal Lake. “Tourists across the globe come here to enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of Kashmir literally known as paradise on earth but the flawed condition of Dal Lake takes no time to change their mindset about Kashmir as the outsiders are unaware about the unwholesome condition of the world famous lake,” lamented Niti Bhatia a tourist form Colaba, Mumbai who was on one month trip to Kashmir. She said the careless approach of authorities will destroy the flora and fauna of Dal Lake. “You can see weeds are extracted from Dal Lake by using machines worth crores but it is irony that no measures are being taken to remove the same form banks which has really given a bad look to this lake,” she said. |
