Never too late to learn, better luck next time | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 9: Calling his party's senior leaders "dead wood accumulated by my father" proves have heavily the deserting of the NC flagship by leaders like Sheikh Gulam Rasool and Ajatshatru Singh weighs on the NC president. Omar Abdullah also said he regretted that the two MLC seats to these two leaders for a term of six years had been wasted. Ironically, this statement on the Twitter site was followed by a more serious one issued by the NC President. Commenting on the reports that retired SSP Ashiq Bukhari had joined the PDP the NC President said how can Mufti Sayed now talk about killings of youth in 2010 because Ashiq Bukhari was, according to Omar Abdullah, the face of police response to 2010 agitation. This is perhaps the most baffling statement made by Omar Abdullah in his entire political career. It is the icing on the political cake of the NC. This debate is not to pass a judgement on 2010 agitation or its causes and effects, but as a matter of fact how can Omar Abdullah deny that the police officer in question was posted to handle the 2010 agitation as SSP Srinagar by none other than Omar Abdullah himself. The CM's father is on record having commented the posting of this officer as SSP Srinagar. When asked that he had made a statement against Ashiq Bukhari in 2008 elections alleging that he had been garnering support for the PDP during those elections and now his son had decided to post him as SSP Srinagar in crisis situation of 2010, Dr. Farooq Abdullah said if the officer could deliver in times of Mufti why can't he deliver in NC's time. Politicians believe people have very short lived memories, but not as short as not to remember things not older than 2008 and 2010. One should not try and be unfair to the NC President who must be feeling betrayed and over-stretched because of the fast changing events those are occurring on the political silver screen of the State. When times are out of joint, people change colours and there is nothing new about that. This is a reality Omar Abdullah knows and understands better than anybody else in J&K's politics this time, but there is also no denying the fact that what is happening to the NC and its estranged and bewildered leadership is Omar's own doing. Ignoring some of the senior most leaders and colleagues of his father, trusting people who are his personal friends but political novices, believing that both Delhi and the people of the State have no option, but to repeat the NC as their only secular and legitimate voice and more than this, the disconnect with his people because of a high flying life style that gels neither with the lives of his people nor the ethos of his once Pro-peasant and Pro-proliferate party. It is never too late to learn and for a politician like him, times is on his side. Better luck next time. As of now, the die seems to have been already cast. |
