Early Time Report

JAMMU, Apr 26 : As part of their rehabilitation programme, police have taken up the initiative of reforming bootleggers and fund education of their children.
Police decided to reform them after it was discovered that despite their repeated arrests, they had not closed down their bhaties "which they use to make illicit liquor". Their reformation had assumed importance for their future and the future of their children, police sources said.Instead of making and selling liquor, they would now be trained in other trades. Once their training was over, they would take up the new business to earn their livelihood, the sources added. Some NGOs were also being involved by police for the success of their new endeavour, sources informed."The objective behind this initiative, which police are doing under their civic education programme, is to ensure that the habitual offenders do not get back to brewing of illicit arrack or smuggling of spurious liquor. They should leave their bad habits and lead a respectable life," sources said.
Under this programme, sewing machines had also been distributed by police among the families of bootleggers in the past.
Illicit liquor business is on the rise in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts. In these areas, people make illicit liquor and then sell it to earn money for running their families.
The most disturbing part of this whole illegal activity is that women are also part of it. Many of them have been apprehended by police while making and selling illicit liquor at their residences.
Police have requested people to get their clothes sewn from these women as sewing machines had been distributed to many of them.Police have also plans to fund education of their children so that when they grow up, they become good citizens of India and do not follow the path that will take them to police lockups and jail only.
