Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 26: Gone are the days when the words of the separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani Shah used to be treated as a divine commandment. Now, the banners against this octogenarian are raised in protests by the youth in open.
During the past few months, it is becoming more evident that Syed Ali Shah Geelani is losing ground in Kashmir valley with his calls and statements receiving dismal response from people at large in valley.
What shook the ground of the Hurriyat led by Geelani was the scene witnessed in Srinagar's old city on Friday. After the congregational prayers were held in Srinagar's grand mosque, youth assembled in groups in the main market and started protesting as usual. What made many to drop jaws was the scene in which youth carried playcards with anti- Geelani slogans inscribed on them. There were certain placards which challenged Geelani's leadership and his pro-Pakistani rants. There were also the placards which questioned Geelani's stand on state's accession to Pakistan.
After the protests, as the pictures of youth with banners and placard were circulated via social media websites, the views in thousands continue to mount.
What surprised the political experts here was the sudden change in youth's mindset that too over the octogenarian leader. Experts are of the opinion that the weird policies of Geelani along with the bizarre diktats have made youth to realise that 86-year-old hurriyat hawk is taking them for a ride.
Within state's political spectrum, such a development was no less than the most un- believable breakthrough in the lull. "Once Geelani used to rule the minds and hearts of the youth in old city. They used to follow his calls as obligation and used to treat his words as no less than prophetic. It would indeed prove worrisome for Geelani to see the monster, he created, smashing him and hitting him hard," says one of the mainstream leaders.
On the other hand, the shutdown called by the separatist leader for Saturday evoked poor response from the general public. Most of the shops remained open with the routine traffic plying on roads on Saturday. There was no scene in which a hartal like situation was witnessed. Also, contrary to the previous practises, no other separatist organisation including the Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik's JKLF supported Geelani's shutdown call.
Meanwhile, sources within the separatist camp told Early Times that such a situation in which anti-Geelani posters have started surfacing in Kashmir valley would loosen Geelani's grip and his political importance would be undermined.
Youth who have started questioning Geelani's authority in Kashmir are of the opinion that the person like Geelani lacks political approach and believes in only reactionary mode of politics. "We see him striving to catch the political uncertainty all the time and then all of sudden taking U-turn. He could no longer take youth for granted in Kashmir as present day generation are more educated and politically matured than the previous ones," youth could be heard as saying in old city when asked over the issue.
