BJP divided over getting support of 5 independent councilors in Udhampur | | | Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, Nov 1: Sharp differences have surfaced in BJP over formation of Municipal Council in Udhampur where party faces shortage of seven members to get majority in 21 member house. According to sources BJP senior leadership wanted to tie up with five independent members owing allegiance to local MLA but some senior leaders from the district are totally opposing it. Sources said to consolidate its position some senior BJP leaders in Jammu favour a tie up with five independents who owe allegiance to local MLA by bringing them into party fold and claim formation of council with the support of another two independents but this suggestion is strongly opposed by some local leaders and they have warned the State leadership that such a decision could have serious consequences. Sources said that on the advice of these two leaders all the four BJP Councilors visited Jammu and held a detailed meeting with party president Ravinder Raina and other senior functionaries and warned against any adjustment with independent MLA from the district. They also threatened to quit BJP in that event by joining National Conference or other political party. Sources said this warning has forced BJP to delay the decision of holding talks with independent MLA for the time being. Sources said under the tie up with independent MLA BJP had agreed to surrender the seat of chairman to independent MLA's group who had also assured support of two unattached councilors. Sources said a senior BJP leader from Jammu had also visited Udhampur to hold talks with independent MLA in this regard and both the leaders had reached an agreement but the deal could not be scripted due to opposition from two senior leaders from Udhampur. However the majority of party leadership is opposed to these two leaders saying they were harming party interests this way. Sources said these two leaders instead are pressing hard that party should have a tie up with National Panthers Party of Prof Bhim Singh which has six members in the House instead of group belonging to independent MLA. This suggestion has however been turned by senior BJP leaders who are not ready to have any truck with Panthers saying that the independent MLA belongs to BJP ideology as he was also it's active member up to 2014 and his father too had given a lot of contribution in propagating the Jan Sangh thought and ideology in the State besides remaining on forefront in Praja Parishad Movement of 1952. |
