SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) coalition partners in the previous Jammu & Kashmir government seem to be in slumber with respect to preparations for the next assembly elections in the state that may be held anytime in the near future.
On the other hand parties like National Conference (NC) and Congress have already started their preparations for the next assembly elections. Leaders of both these parties have been organizing public rallies in the twin capital cities of the state and trying their best to lure the masses towards them.
Both PDP and BJP have failed in Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively and it would be difficult for them to repeat the 2014 performance. It would not be a surprise if these parties receive a drubbing in the next assembly elections with both of them losing many seats in the process.
PDP that emerged single largest part in the 2014 assembly elections with 28 seats is battling crisis with many of its former legislators deserting the party ranks and joining political parties like NC and Peoples Conference. Some of the party deserters have not decided about their next course of action and the same would be known only in days to come.
It would be a herculean task for the party to retain the seats won by it in the previous assembly elections. This is more so since South Kashmir, once a stronghold of the party is on boil as encounters between militants and security forces has become an everyday affair. The party image has taken a severe hit in the recent past in the state especially South Kashmir.
PDP's erstwhile coalition partner BJP has also not yet started the electioneering for the next assmbly elections. This is despite the fact that the party has very little to show to people as its achievements during the three and half years' government in coalition with PDP. The party may bank upon the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sail through in the next assembly elections.
Ever since the 2014 assembly elections the BJP has suffered some shocks with leaders like Lal Singh and Dr. Gagan Bhagat leaving the party fold. While Bhagat joined the National Conference, Singh launched his own outfit claiming the same would revive and restore the Dogra heritage and culture. Party leaders like Chander Prakash Ganga and Chaudhary Sukhnandan Kumar are also not happy with the party leadership in the state.
NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah have been visiting different areas of Kashmir and Jammu as part of their preparations for the next assembly elections. The father-son duo has addressed many rallies in this regard and exposed the previous PDP-BJP government.
Congress leaders have also been campaigning in the different parts of the state hoping that they would be part of the next government in Jammu & Kashmir. The state leaders of Congress are hoping that they would be able to weave some magic in near future so that people vote for them in the next assembly election.
