| Indian Army targets Pakistan Army with new sniper rifles across Line of Control | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 20: The Indian Army is learnt to have been targeting the Pakistan Army with state-of-the-art sniper rifles along the Line-of-Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The sniper rifle fire is being directed towards Pakistani posts involved in violating the ceasefire agreement, sources told .
The sources said the rifles involved in the Indian action against Pakistani troops are the Finnish Lapua Magnum and a rifle made by the Italian company Beretta. Both these rifle were procured by the Indian Army recently on a fast track basis. According to the sources, the new rifles were purchased directly by the army's Northern Command under financial powers granted to the commanding-in-chief of the Northern Command. Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh is the current commanding-in-chief of the Northern Command.
The damage caused by the sniper rifle fire is yet to be ascertained, the sources said.
The development comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan post the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, in which 40 jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force were martyred. In response, the Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike deep inside Pakistan, targeting the largest terror camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, which carried out the Pulwama attack.
The Pakistan Air Force attempted to respond a day later, on February 27, but was met by the Indian Air Force, which engaged the Pakistani jets in a dogfight over Jammu and Kashmir. An Indian MiG-21 Bison jet shot down an Pakistani F-16 fighter jet, the government said. The MiG's pilot too was shot down and captured by Pakistan Army.
The pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was released two days later, a development that significantly cooled tensions between India and Pakistan and pulled the nuclear-armed countries back from the brink of armed conflict.
