Govt adopts selective approach towards Corona warriors
Thousands of ASHA workers compelled to conduct survey without PPEs

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 26: Although the fight against COVID-19 has been becoming more critical with each passing day but the government seems to be little worried about the precious life of thousands of the ASHA workers, who have been engaged to conduct door to door survey on COVID-19 without providing them proper Personal Protection Equipments (PPE).
Sources told Early Times that these ASHA workers being one of vital front warriors in fighting Coronavirus, who have been discharging their duties or conducting door to door survey to track their travel history and know about their health and any symptoms, in very difficult circumstances due to non-availability of protection kits, which is likely to put their life at risk.
“Despite the fact that they are the most vulnerable to COVID-19 as they are exposed to virus while visiting door to door and had to interact with each members of the family but these ASHA workers, who are around 14 thousands in strength across the State have not been provided with special protection kits,” they alleged.
ASHA workers alleged that most of the workers had to spend from their own pocket to purchase masks and sanitizers in order to protect their life while conducting survey. “We have been discharging our duty by putting our life in danger yet administration doesn’t pay due consideration towards our safety. Number requests were made to the concerned department to provide us with PPEs so that we can do our job without fear but it seems that government is hardly serious towards our plights,” alleged ASHA workers Rifat Aara and Anita Rajput while talking to Early Times.
They further said that they had also been facing security concern during conducting survey as in recent past few incidents have taken place wherein they were attacked by some residents for conducting survey. “We are working on petty remuneration of Rs 2000 per month and that too is not given us regularly. No proper training was provided us before conducting survey. It is very essential that we should be given protective gear comprising of masks, gloves, full cover suits, hand sanitizers and soap etc,” said Gita Devi, an ASHA worker.
