Omar’s overreaction | | | Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has once again pressed the dukhti rag of the Kashmir centric politicians, especially Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference by reminding them that they boycotted Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. These polls were announced by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He had urged the political parties to participate in the process to strengthen the grass root democracy. However, both NC and PDP stayed away from the process and had termed the holding of Panchayat elections in J&K as a “futile exercise.” The former J&K Governor, Satya Pal Malik, recently claimed that he had broken the protocol and had visited the residences of Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti to persuade them to participate in the Panchayat polls. But they didn’t pay any heed to his advice. Malik’s assertion triggered a sharp reaction from the NC vice-president and former J&K chief minister, Omar Abdullah. He took pot shots at Malik and launched a scathing attack on him. He accused him of not speaking the truth. Omar’s overreaction cannot change the reality that his party National Conference and PDP boycotted the Panchayat polls despite repeated appeals made by the central leadership to come forward to participate in the democratic exercise. Since the day Omar Abdullah has been released from the detention, he has been making desperate attempts to improve his ties with the Centre. He has dropped enough hints to convey to New Delhi that the NC has forgotten the past and wants to move ahead. But till date he hasn’t got any response from the people sitting in the National Capital. Many people are of the opinion that National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have become irrelevant and both these parties don’t matter anymore. The abrogation of J&K’s special status has left these parties issueless. Their leaders have been left with nothing to sell. Omar is struggling hard to place himself in the changed political scenario in the newly carved out J&K UT, which is being directly managed by New Delhi since 2018, after the fall of PDP-BJP government. No one can snatch Omar’s right to speech but along with that he needs to acknowledge the fact that his party had crossed the line and it was trying to sell the narrative which was against the interests of the country. He can keep on trying to send a message to Delhi that he is ready to accept the change and its should also forget the past and move ahead. People like the former J&K Governor will keep on reminding him about the mistakes his party committed in the past but that should not bog him down. He is free to make any number of attempts. |
