PMAY grossly misused in Sunderbani as well-off people get funds, construct mansions

Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, June 22: The flagship programme Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) has been grossly ‘misused’ by the officials of Rural Development Department (RDD) in this tehsil of the Rajouri district as the deserving have been left out of the scheme.
Early Times has learnt from sources that former Block Development Officer (BDO), Village Level Worker (VLW) and Gram Rozgar Sevak (GRS) have misused the PMAY and allotted houses to people who do not deserve it in the Nallah Panchayat of this tehsil. The people who were entitled to the flagship programme have been denied the benefits.
“The PMAY was introduced to provide houses to the poor people who belong to Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. The houses consisted of one bedroom, one kitchen and a Verandah. The primary objective of PMAY was to provide shelter to the needy so that they do not spend their day and night under the open sky,” said sources. Sources said that the PMAY has been grossly misused as the people belonging to well-off families have been shown as beneficiaries and houses allotted to them. They said that the ‘fake’ beneficiaries have spent around Rs 10-15 lakhs and constructed full-fledged houses consisting of many rooms and also a washroom. “It is highly unfortunate that the deserving people including the widows have been left out of the PMAY. As a result of this they are suffering like anything with no justice in sight for them. The rich are becoming richer and the poor poorer at least in this tehsil of the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir,” said sources.
Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Rajouri, Sushil Khajuria accepted the fact that wrongs have taken place in the allotment of houses under the PMAY. He said that stern action would be taken against the officials involved in the whole matter. In the meantime, the locals have demanded vigilance probe in the whole matter and said that same is necessity of hour.
