Dental Surgeons attached, CMO least bothered
Technicians running PHCs in Budgam

EARLY TIMES REPORT

BUDGAM, Nov 13: At a time when the government claims to be providing quality health services to people in Govt run health institutions, the situation is worse when it comes to Dental Health especially in Budgam district. The poor patients in remote areas are forced to either get treated from un-qualified dental assistants or have to get the treatment from private clinics which is very costly.
Until recently the Dental Surgeons in Budgam district would tell patients that they can’t treat them in view of COVID 19 but the same doctors would continue to run their clinics and mint money from poor patients in addition to being paid a hefty salary by Govt.
In some Primary Health Centers (PHCs) where there is only one Dental Surgeon, CMO Budgam has attached them for COVID 19 duty while as Dental Assistants or technicians who are supposed to only assist the Dental Surgeons are undertaking several dental procedures like tooth extractions , etc.
In PHC Surasyar there is post of one Dental Surgeon who has been attached with SDH Chadoora for COVID 19 duty while as the poor population of this hilly area (Surasyar) are left to God’s mercy by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Budgam.
The CMO recently attached a Dental Surgeon posted at SDH Chadoora to CHC Nagam where there are already 5 to 6 Dental Surgeons (3 at CHC and 3 in periphery PHCs). Right now the Sub District Hospital Chadoora which has a huge footfall is managed by an unqualified dental assistant which is a criminal act on part of authorities particularly the CMO Budgam.
Sources told Early Times that many Dental Surgeons hardly do dental procedures like RCT, Impactions , Restorations etc in the Govt PHC’s or even Sub District Hospitals (SDHs) while the Govt has kept all the material available in these hospitals. The patients are forced to go to private clinics for such treatments
“In Pvt clinic one has to pay Rs 2000 for Root Canal Treatment (RCT) but the same can be done in Govt hospital also as qualified dental surgeons are posted there plus all the material is available as well but this treatment is not done in most of the Govt hospitals except Govt Dental College Hospitals in Srinagar / Jammu. Why is the Govt paying Rs 1 lakh or 2 lakhs salary to Dental Surgeons when they are merry in Budgam and the CMO is least bothered ?, “ questioned Shahid Ali, a resident of Budgam.
