early Times Report

Rajouri, Jan 24: Since the administration has released the order for inviting the people for Khairwood cutting according to the Forest and Revenue departments ’ norms, lobbying among the contractors have started in Reasi and Rajouri district who are influencing the khairwood trees owners for illegal cutting.
It is inplac to mention that since a few years ago also when the and administration had released the order for Khairwood cutting , the contractors having influenced the owners had cut down many trees, most of which are still lying unremoved at various places in both the districts .
As per the government norms, an owner of the trees according to the size , thickness and acceptability of the cutting of the wood is given a particular number to be cut down.
“ Earlier , the contractors went on rampage and illegally fell hundreds of the Khairwood trees causing great loss to the environment as well as state exchequer also . Many of the trees last cut down are still lying unattended at many places which is a sheer negligence of both Forest and Revenue Departments ,” allege local people of both the districts .
They said that the government should take cognizance of such corruption being done under its very nose and many illegal contractors are being benefited under the garb .
“ We demand that a Special Investigation Team ( SIT) be constituted so that the illegal felling of the prized possession of green gold is saved ,” added the locals of the districts .
A senior Forest officer when approached about such clandestine activity having started by some illegal influencing contractors to reach the people to get the khairwood illegally cut , he assured about the action to be taken against anybody found guilty.
“ We are looking into the matter and will investigate the matter. Any body found having indulged in such malpractice will be brought to books,” assured the senior forest official.
Meanwhile the locals of both the districts of Reasi and Rajouri have appealed to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for personnel intervention in the issue and take cognizance as soon as possible.
