UDHAMPUR, Mar 20: In a shocking case, the wife of a government employee with shooting pain had to shed about Rs 55000 for an emergency surgery at a prominent private hospital in Katra after her Ayushman Card was not honoured by the medical institution.
The 23 year old lady from Udhampur district visited the renowned hospital with her husband as she was in pain.
As her husband asked the reception counter about the facility of Ayushman Card benefits he was asked to visit. He had to wait for about an hour but officials did not give any satisfactory reply to his queries.
Finding his wife in unbearable pain, he asked the officials at the hospital for any alternate means and he was told that he can apply through payment mode, otherwise he would have to wait till the process of Ayushmann card is completed. He asked again how much he would have to pay for the treatment. He was told that about Rs 50,000 to Rs 55000 for full treatment as the lady has stone in her kidney and needs an immediate surgery.
Ultimately the patient was admitted and the surgery was performed next day after the couple shed the amount demanded by the hospital authorities.
After witnessing the torment, the man called at the helpline number of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogaye Yojana (PM-JAY or Ayushmann scheme). He was told that in emergency cases the treatment can be started even without documentation which can even take place afterwards.
Arun Kumar, a student, said that if a poor man is caught in such a situation what he will do under such circumstances. "Even though PM Modi at his end has given an excellent medical scheme for the public including rich and poor but some people with vested interest are not allowing it to run," he added.
When contacted, marketing manager of the hospital, Anshuman Sharma, said that there is some technical snag with the Ayushman portal due to which such issues arise. However, he said that despite the snag they are still accommodating the cases of the Ayushman scheme.
