India records 43,846 new COVID-19 cases, active count crosses 3 lakh
3/21/2021 12:03:47 PM
ew Delhi: India in the past 24 hours recorded 43,846 new COVID-19 cases, according to the official data of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The sudden recent surge in coronavirus cases has taken the country's active count to more than 3 lakh. There were also 22,956 COVID-19 recoveries and 197 deaths on Saturday.

As per the official data, India has witnessed a total of 1,15,99,130 infections, of which, 3,09,087 are still active. More than 1.1 crore people have recovered, whereas, over 1.59 have succumbed to the virus. The fresh surge is reportedly the highest in 112 days.

Five states namely Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have reported a surge in the coronavirus daily new cases. Maharashtra, the worst- COVID-19-hit state across India, has been witnessing a second wave of the pandemic. It reported over the highest daily new cases at 25,681. It is followed by Punjab with 2,470 while Kerala reported 1,984 new cases.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that a total of 4,46,03,841 people have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine. Meanwhile, AIIMS director Randeep Guleria said that the main reason behind the recent rise in the cases is that people feel the pandemic is over and they are not following COVID appropriate behaviour.

"There are multiple reasons for the surge, but the main reason is that there is a change in people's attitude and they feel coronavirus is over. People should still restrict non-essential travel for some more time," Guleria said.NITI Aayog member (Health) VK Paul said the chain of transmission has to be stopped and for that vaccine is one tool but another is containment and surveillance strategy.

"Not following COVID-19 behaviour and laxity is a major reason for the surge," he said speaking at the same event
