Early Times Report

Jammu, May 4: The latest decision of University of Jammu to conduct annual examination of the students of graduation degree courses likely to prove financially beneficial as the varsity would not to pay for stationery, invigilating staff, for setting of question papers while other expenditures for which it has already taken fee from the students.
Sources informed Early Times that over 66 Government Degree Colleges are affiliated with the University of Jammu in which around 50,000 students have been enrolled in the three semesters of the graduation course.
“The University charges Rs. 1520 from each student for two semesters as examination fee during the admissions to the new semester. As per given enrolment the University has already collected around Rs. 7.60 Crores as part of the examination fee from the students apart from some other fee the University gets from the admission fee”, an official informed Early Times.
The official further said that from the examination fee collected from the students, the varsity has to pay for various purposes including to pay the experts who set the question papers, for printing of question papers, to purchase stationery items such as answer scripts, pay to invigilators and then for the answer scripts' evaluation process.
“But now the University has decided to conduct online examination and the onus to set question papers is on the college faculty members, while the students have been asked to give online examination through a link shared by the respective college faculty members and also write the answers on A4 size white sheets which will be uploaded on the given link”, sources said, adding that in this process the University has saved the money from spending on setting of question papers, purchase of stationery such as answer scripts, printing of question papers and some other miscellaneous activities”, sources said, adding that due to this mode, the University would likely to save a whopping amount from the examination fee collected from the students.
Sources further said that though the University has already conveyed to the faculty members of the respective colleges to evaluate the answer scripts on their own but it was still undecided as to whether they would also be paid on not. “As per verbal communication there are possibilities that the faculty members, who would evaluate the answer scripts would be paid the evaluation fee”, sources said, adding that but it was still unclear as where the remaining funds of the examination fee would be spend by the Varsity, which it would save by not printing question papers as well as on purchase of stationery items.
“It is still unclear whether the University will return the examination fee to the students or to the respective colleges”, sources said.
Controller of Examination of Jammu University Prof. Jasbir Singh said that the decision to conduct online examination was taken by the administrative wing of the University and they would decide over the issue.
