Probes, probes, everywhere, respite nowhere in Jammu

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 18: The Jammu and Kashmir government has been busy ordering probes into the deadly failure in the deliverance of services to the people of Jammu amid Covid19 but till now respite is awaited.
In the last two months, the government has ordered two major probes. One, into the complaints of death of Covid patients allegedly due to oxygen supply failure at hospitals here. Two, over power supply failure in these testing times.
While the people are yet to know about the outcome of the probe ordered into death of patients due to oxygen supply failure, fresh complaints of oxygen supply failure at government hospital have poured in from same Jammu district.
On June 16, the patients admitted in a COVID-19 ward at Government Medical College Jammu here had narrow escape when the oxygen supply went off for around ten minutes, as per the attendants of the patients.
The oxygen failure had led to drastic fall in the oxygen saturation levels of the patients.
A senior medico told Early Times that such failure of oxygen supply could have proved deadly for the patients. “One can say that luck has favored them otherwise they could have died,” said a senior medico on the condition of anonymity.
The fresh negligence on the part of the administration has taken place when the government has already ordered probe in similar complaints last month when Jammu witnessed highest mortality.
On May 2, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr Raghav Langar had constituted a committee to enquire into circumstances leading to incident involving mortality at a hospital in Jammu allegedly “due to shortage of Oxygen.”
“The Committee of officers/domain experts including Director Industries and Commerce, Jammu/Member of the Committee constituted vide Govt. Order No. 341-JK (GAD) of 2021 dated 17.04.2021 – to ensure adequate and timely supply of Medical Oxygen – Director Health Service, Jammu and Superintendent Engineer Mechanical Engineering Department, Jammu have been asked to assist the enquiry officer during the proceeding of the enquiry,” said the order.
While the people are yet to know about the outcome of that inquiry , news cases of oxygen supply malfunction have popped up and this time from the GMC Jammu, which is the biggest Covid treatment facility in entire Jammu province.
Amid hot summer, the power crises in Jammu, on the other hand, has been no less deadly.
While scores of Covid patients at home need power supply for running oxygen concentrators and others feel breathless in scorching heat, Jammu has been witnessing major power breakdown.
At places, helpless people took to streets to protest what they called government apathy prompting the concerned to order inquiry.
On June 17, the government appointed Principal Secretary Home Shaileen Kabra as inquiry officer to probe power crises in Jammu.
Interestingly on the same day, the power department gave schedule for fresh shutdown of supplies in Jammu.
And, so the argument goes on as the historic City of Temples continues to suffer!
