| Time not ripe for demilitralisation in J & K: Azad | | | | Srinagar, Mar 4
Dismissing reports about an immediate demilitralisation of Jammu and Kashmir in the near future, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that time was not ripe for such a move.'' Addressing a public meeting at Uri, about 100 km from here in north Kashmir yesterday, Mr Azad said once peace was visible on the ground in the state, withdrawal of troops will automatically follow.
Immediate demilitarization was not possible when innocent people are being killed,'' he said, adding that peace was not visible in Kashmir despite people desperatey yearning for it. For withdrawal of troops, peace is a pre-condition, he added.
Lauding the security forces for their work during all these years, he said they are deployed in the state for the safety and security of the people.
Without naming the coalition partner in the government, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the separatist organisations, Mr Azad said those demanding withdrawal or reduction of troops should take into account the ground situation before making such a demand.

| Pakistan test-fires short-range ballistic missile | | | | ISLAMABAD, MAR 3
Pakistan today test-fired a short-range surface-to-surface nuclear capable missile 'Hatf-II Abdali', barely eight days after a similar test.
The missile with a range of 200km was an "indigenously developed" short-range ballistic missile, which could carry all types of warheads, a Defence statement here said adding that the test firing was aimed at validating "desired technical parameters which has been successfully achieved".
Abdali, named after the 18th century Afghan monarch, Ahmad Shah Abadli who invaded parts of India was last time test-fired in February 2006.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dismissed as ‘speculation’ Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's claim that India and Pakistan have agreed to reduce troops in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
"These are all speculation," he said when asked to comment on the Mirwaiz's statement in Srinagar on Friday that the two countries had agreed on the withdrawal of troops from either side of the Line of Control in Kashmir.
Singh made it clear that security forces had been deployed only to protect citizens and the government was not averse to reducing their levels once terrorism ceased.
