| Congress snatching Thiksay seat bad omen for BJP | | Anti-BJP wave in Ladakh | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 8: No one had ever thought that the BJP would on June 7 lose the prestigious Thicksay Council seat to the Congress, but it did happen much to the chagrin of the BJP. The BJP had been saying day in and day out that the BJP would win three of the 4 Ladakh Assembly seats in 2020, improve its tally of 25 in Jammu and would form its own government in the state with chief minister from Jammu. By poll was held on June 4. The seat had fallen vacant after the demise of the Chief Executive Councilor Sonam Dawa. Thiksay was a prestigious seat as it was represented by Sonam Dawa
The Congress candidate Tundup Gyasto snatched the seat from the BJP. He defeated the BJP candidate Stanzin Chospel by 109 votes. The Congress candidate got 1163 votes. The Ladakhi Buddhists not only made the BJP to bite dust but also dashed the hope of the NC, which wanted to enter the Council. He got just 249 votes. The NC's massive defeat again established that the Buddhist Leh had no place in the region, who question the state's integration into India and demand autonomy. As for the ruling PDP, it didn't field any candidate.
In October 2015, the BJP had created a history of sorts by winning 17 out of the 24 elected seats. It happened for the first time. The BJP had described its victory as the opening of a new chapter in the trans-Himalayan region. The jubilant BJP on October 23, 2015 asserted that "the party has written a new chapter" in Ladakh after sweeping the 26-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh (LAHDC) elections that day.
"Those who had been preaching that BJP is a party confined to two and half districts of Jammu, should now accept the ground reality that it has its strong holds in Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir, while Congress and NC are losing ground after every election", Shamsher Singh Manhas had said while reflecting on the BJP's landslide victory. "BJP has written a new chapter in Ladakh and the credit for the same goes to the policies of Narendra Modi-led NDA government and the ideology and principles of BJP as we have stood with the people of Ladakh during all these years when Congress and NC only played vote bank politics," he said.
The BJP defeat in Thiksay has upset its apple-cart and dampen its spirit. After all, the BJP is in power at the Centre and is also part of the PDP-led coalition government in the tate. Besides, the lone Ladakh MP, Thupstan Shhewang, also belonged to the BJP. Not just this, the BJP had overwhelming majority in the Lay Autonomous Hill Development Council.
Insiders say that "the defeat of the BJP in Thiksay at the hands of the Congress is a bad omen for the party" and that "the party would lose 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the 2020 Assembly and Leh Council polls in case it continued to follow appeasement policy". "We had promised UT to Ladakh during the Lak Sabha polls and Council elections, but we cheated the Buddhists of Ladakh. And the result is the party suffered a defeat," the insider also said. "Anti-BJP wave has gripped both Ladakh and Jammu. Only God can save the BJP," he also said on the condition of anonymity. |
