Why CCI is silent…..have protesting traders' worries vanished….? | Omar hails FDI move, keen for implementation in J&K… | |
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 16: It was only last month when the talk about UPA government at Centre had gained momentum about latter having made up its mind firmly on allowing FDI in retail outlets , the winter capital of state Jammu witnessed protests by hundreds of traders who were opposing the move and criticizing the policy of the government . Two days after the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh finally pushed the decision with formal announcement, which was promptly responded by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as a right step , Chamber of Commerce which led the protests earlier is yet to come out with a formal reaction. CCI as also the traders have strangely adopted silence over the issue that concerns them directly. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his own assessment or understanding of the things related to economy or for political reasons appreciated this move promptly as always. In fact he backed the Centre's move to leave the decision on allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector to the respective state governments and in that sense indicated that his government might push the things ahead in the direction in his own state or elsewhere, without centre's much interference . For reasons apparent , obviously on the political front he criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav for opposing the decision on FDI in retail brands. The point of argument here, however, is on a different line rather than discussing what Omar Abdullah wants Centre to enable his state do on this issue or about raising fingers at Mamta Banerjee's opposition. It is to question that why CCI Jammu in particular and traders have chosen silence at a time they should speak and were seen quite vocal when the move was in pipeline . All major traders bodies and organizations staged protests last month , in what looked as meaningful opposition to the proposed move , that would harm their interests. The president of the Jammu Chamber of Commerce YV Sharma had led the protests only last month and vehemently demanded that Union government should not allow FDI in retail across the country. Allowing FDI in retail within the country and permitting multi-national and foreign companies to open their sale outlets for consumer items in the country is going to adversely affect the business interest of the local trading community, he is on record of having conveyed the concern of the traders fraternity while speaking to media. He even expressed resentment and anger of the traders on the point that this proposal (at that point of time when they held protests) to relax FDI controls in the retail sector is causing great discontent and anxiety among local wholesale and retail traders, as it will result in more unemployment. Most of the protesters consisting of small, big traders had expressed worries to the extent that this will render them jobless and snatch livelihood of lakhs of families in the state as a whole. So far so good, these were the issues and points raised at the time of staging the protest demonstrations last month. One only wonders where has this concern, resentment and worry vanished when the government has finally given it a nod. Why is CCI silent when the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself has welcomed it a great, progressive move and shown keen interest in so far as his own state is concerned….? |
