| Assertive Cong gets in combative mode | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 28: After getting rebuked by Omar Abdullah on its demand for empowerment and security of Sarpanches and Panches, the Congress has decided to go on a aggressive and defiant mode. The youth wing of the party had not only staged a protest demonstration and went to the extent of demanding resignation of Omar Abdullah, at the same time on Friday, the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand visited the family of Sarpanch killed in Kashmir and paid Rs 50,000 from his own. The Congress has decided to posture itself as a distinct and independent political entity which is not in the clutches of the Omar Abdullah led National Conference. The Congress which has pan-Indian base and has a character of national party hasn't taken lightly the assertion of Omar Abdullah that he will not accept 73rd and 74th Amendments of the Indian Constitution. There is a feeling in the Cong camp, which has been conveyed to the party high command, that such posturing by the CM if not confronted would send the wrong signal that party for sheer love of power is aligning with forces and parties which want to be independent entity of the Indian Constitution. The other reason being that SC and ST constitute an important vote bank for the party. The Congress through its political history has aligned with SC and ST and has appeared to be sensitive to their demands. It's for this reason that though J&K doesn't send much MPs but by being assertive on its demand it is trying to send the message across the country its sensitive to the issue of SC and ST. Cong has enough experience of dealing with the histrionics of National Conference and has learned from its experience of dealing with from Sheikh Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah. Party has learned hard way that unless NC is confronted it wouldn't change its political course as Cong knows now that the NC can enjoy power only at its behest. NC by rubbing Congress is trying to build its own political constituency , a game plan which is not being taken lightly by the Congress and it knows its own political survival lies in confronting NC rather than succumbing to it especially in politically sensitive time like. |
