Demand for declaring gazetted holiday on Accession Day gaining momentum
10/26/2012 11:03:09 PM
ET Report
JAMMU, Oct 26: The demand for declaring Accession Day as holiday is gaining momentum with leaders of various political parties and social organisations making a public demand in this regard during the Accession Day celebrations here today.
The BJP State chief Shamsher Singh Manhas while addressing the party functions here today held in connection with celebration of Accession Day said this is a historical day for the State of J&K and its significance is in no way less than Independence Day and Republic Day for the people of J&K.
Manhas said that Maharaja of J&K took a historic step by signing the instrument of Accession with Union of India and it was with his timely action that Indian forces landed in J&K to push back the Pak invaders who had raided the State on October 22, 1947.
Khajuria, while lambasting the then Union Government said had the Indian forces been allowed to go ahead there would have been no PoK today and Kashmir crisis would have not existed. It was with this Himalayan blunder that State of J&K is facing crisis for last 23 years.
Supporting his demand BJP MLA from Jammu East Ashok Khajuria said the Government should announce October 27 as a gazetted holiday like Independence Day and Republic Day as the day is much more important and significant for the people of the State. He said a history was created on that day with merger of J&K with Indian Union by then Maharaja Hari Singh.
Khajuria also gave credit of accession of the State with Union of India to former RSS chief Guru Golvalkar saying had he not been pursued the Maharaja by personally visiting the State and holding close door meeting with him the Accession of the State with Indian Union would have not been possible.
The demand was also made by VHP chief Dr Rama Kant Dubey who not only demanded that a gazetted holiday be declared on October 27 but he also demanded that the day be celebrated on the same pattern throughout the State as Independence Day and Republic Day are officially celebrated.
He also demanded immediate abrogation of Article 370 giving special status to J&K by its total merger with Union of India.
Declaring gazetted holiday on Accession Day was earlier demanded by convener J&K People’s Forum, Ramesh Sabharwal who had appealed the Jammuites to celebrate the day with much fan fare and enthusiasm.
Sabharwal has also made an appeal to Government to celebrate the day at official level by organising official function illuminating Government buildings and Civil Secretariat both at Jammu and Srinagar.
