| New Delhi disappoints J&K Government despite 'pleading' on many counts? | | No respite in LPG crisis | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 26: NC led coalition in J&K is disillusioned the way New Delhi is overlooking the concern expressed by the Government with respect to crisis of LPG cylinders which is deepening by the day, more so in Kashmir valley where harshness of winters has begun to show its pinch. The Government is disappointed more in the backdrop of the fact that New Delhi has yet to respond to the request of a group of senior Ministers who pleaded before Prime Minister that cap on number of cylinders be increased for the State. Sources said while Government has come to know that Union Government may not take any favourable decision that could provide some relief and reprieve to the consumers as also give some 'face saving' to it, the group of Ministers who met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh with this specific purpose, feel upset and let down as there appears to be no positive indication from any quarters to the request they made verbally as also through the memorandum submitted to Prime Minister last week. The group of Ministers was led by Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand. Other Ministers included Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, S.S. Slathia and Qamar Ali Akhoon who discussed issue of supply of subsidized LPG gas cylinders to the consumers in J&K and strongly pleaded increase in number for the State. And for this they, while highlighting the peculiar geographical diversity, severe winter, remoteness of the State, the Ministers also contended it was necessary in view of the insufficiency of electricity and economic stress of people due to long period of militancy. It is pertinent to mention that Chief Minister decided to send this group to New Delhi in the wake of the decision his Government took in the Cabinet meeting prior to this that J&K must seek and strongly advocate enhancement in the number of subsidized LPG cylinders to be supplied to the consumers in Jammu and Kashmir. While the Ministers had expressed the hope that Centre would positively accede to the demand of J&K Government, which they pleaded with many reasons, sources said they are now remorseful and saddened at the cold response of Union Government and nourish no hope of any nod that could defuse the crisis felt with severity in Kashmir valley. Sources said though the Prime Minister had assured the group of Ministers that the demand of the Jammu and Kashmir would be looked into, but the Government is expecting no decision soon, Congress being pre occupied with polls in some States and other burning issues. It is worthwhile to mention that when the Congress led UPA Government announced some tough decisions to ensure accelerated economic growth of the country last month, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was among the first persons who not only hailed the move but extended support to such decisions, NC being ally at the Centre too. When it came to handling issues back home, particularly the problem arising out of drastic reduction in subsidized LPG cylinders, CM and his Government exuberated full confidence that New Delhi would have a relook in the matter, J&K being 'special' on many counts. But that confidence is gradually turning into big disappointment for the Government. |
