| Jammuites beware, ‘Nawabs’ are coming | | | Early Times Report Jammu Oct 28—As the State government offices close in Srinagar, authorities are busy sprucing up the winter capital Jammu for the arrival of the Moghals of the 21st century. These days the traditional process of painting and polishing can be seen at many places in Jammu which for most of the summer months gets completely neglected because the Nawabs of the modern times are busy enjoying the cool breeze of the Valley. Not that there is any special affection the modern day kings and knights have for the people of the Valley either. Jammu needs its rulers the most during the tough and trying summer months while the Valley needs them during the extreme cold of the winter months. Unfortunate for the people of both the regions, the personal comforts of the present day rulers must come first. It has not made any difference since times immemorial. All kinds of politicians and masters of the people’s political destiny have come to power in J&K and yet hardly have most of them ever cared to understand the misery and sufferings of the ordinary citizens. While attention should be paid to the alarming increase in the number of road accidents occurring across the State on a daily basis, the authorities are painting road dividers and traffic crossing not to ensure public safety, but to ensure that the knightly ride of the master does not get an offending ambience because of the shabby looks those unpainted road crossings might give. Huge amounts of public money are expended to ensure that the VVIPs get round the clock electric supply while the ordinary citizens continue to wait for electricity as its supply has already become not only erratic, but unpredictable as well. The incidents of crimes against women and children have started becoming a routine and it must be said without any fear of rebuttal that an average citizen thinks a dozen times before reporting these incidents to the police. The police-criminal nexus is another innovation of the modern times. You enter any police station in Jammu city and you would be shocked to see that known bad characters of the area are not inside the police station because they are in the lock-up, but because they are having tea and Pakodas with the concerned SHOs. The law abiding citizens who come to report their problems are made to stand and wait for hours because the Sahib is discussing some important issues with a known criminal of his area. In situations like these, all the Jammuites can be advised about for the next six months is to BEWARE because the Nawabs are coming. |
