Darbar move: Be prepared for traffic woes with more influx of vehicles

Jammu Oct 29: While govt is completely engaged in the ongoing preparations for the traditional ‘Durbar Move, ‘ but people in city of temples – the winter capital are pondering over heavy influx of vehicles on Jammu roads to put an additional pressure for commuters where recently installed traffic signal already bring things to be almost baffling.
Be prepared!!!, as the tough time is in store for commuters on Jammu roads as the shifting of Civil Secretariat and other offices from Srinagar will put additional pressure of over 25K vehicles, including those of VVIPs and VIPs including ministers and bureaucrats, on the road where the situation is already chaotic.
Pertinently as part of the Darbar move, the Civil Secretariat - seat of government - and other government offices are scheduled to close in Srinagar on October 25 and will reopen in Jammu, the state’s winter capital, on November 5.
Not only the traffic police, which already is gasping under pressure due to shortage of manpower people too have been exploring options to streamline their movement.
“There are around 5.5 lakh vehicles in Jammu. The figure is nearly half of the total vehicular population of the state. The city roads generally witness with traffic snarls due to the congestion and even due to repeated horn honking in old city Jammu which is hub of the political and administrative activities during the tenure of seat of power.
According to official statistics, a traffic cop mans over thousand vehicles on Jammu roads on an average to streamline the traffic movement which itself as the department is battling with severe manpower crunch.
“Though the traffic signals have been made functional and but the maiden Darbar move after the installation of these signals, is being looked as compounding the traffic scenario more chaotic on roads.
Meanwhile sources further added approximately 20,000 fresh vehicles have also been added to the city traffic since the shifting of the Durbar Move to summer capital Srinagar in this April.
“Besides these constrains the things that will add pressure to traffic cops to handle the crisis on roads is the jumping of traffic signals by the mini bus drivers and zooming teen drivers on roads, which still is rampant despite traffic cops tall claims from traffic cops saying they have managed things and have brought tem under control,” sources said.
“Within the tall claims the traffic police despite its hectic efforts have failed to streamline traffic on the two main squares i.e. Dogra and Vikram Chowk, said Rohit Thakur a university student.
Reasoning that lack of any traffic signal reveals the high ‘unprofessionalism’ within traffic police department, he said, “Keeping in view to decongest traffic at Bridge and Vikram Chowk which witnesses direct vehicular movement from first arterial way i.e. Fly over Jammu, they should have made a check point at Dogra Chowk to decrease the dead weight on Tawi Bridge which at times witnesses huge traffic jams at times.’
“The among the two said Chowks the Vikram Chowk will be hub of activities as every VVIP/VIP while going outside state or to the summer capital has to pass through this rotary which always witnesses traffic congestion, he said adding, “ the traffic signal post/trees’ at Dogra Chowk would certainly check the flow of vehicles towards Vikarm Chowk giving a pause to routine bottle necked traffic at Vikram Chowk>
Meanwhile the sources within traffic police including some higher officials are hopeful that they will handle the traffic movement better this time because of installation of traffic signals.
