| Trust deficit can be reduced by improved cross-LoC trade, travel | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 9: While Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has decided to prevail of the Government of India to take up with Islamabad the issue of reopening of Jammu-Sialkot route for trade and travel, a large number of traders besides other groups have started demanding improvement of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot routes in order to ensure hassle free trade and travel to enhance people to people contact.Majority of Jammu traders have been favouring reopening of Suchetgarh-Sialkot route for trade and travel on the plea it would cut down the cost on transshipment of goods from the state's winter capital to Poonch. Majority of trading community has demanded upgrading of facilities at the entry points on the LoC in terms of board and lodge facilities. Besides this the traders would welcome if the Government in Jammu and that of Muzaffarabad introduced cold store facilities at the entry points in order to ensure that fresh fruits were not damaged in transit. The traders have communicated to the state and the central Governments the need for setting up banking facilities so that they were not forced to bank on the barter system which was not profitable at all. They have demanded that soon after the banking facilities were set up in Jammu, Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, Uri, Poonch, Rawalakot, New Delhi and Islamabad need to remove restrictions on the export and import of items. They want the export-import list to remain without any limitations and restrictions. During a two-day intra Kashmir women conference, held in Muzaffarabad, women participants from both sides of the LOC demanded simplification of visa rules so that vistors crossing the LOC could travel on a smart card or on some easily available travel documents.It also said that free people to people contact among people of the divided Kashmir besides increased level of cross-LOC trade were required for reducing the existing trust deficit. |
