| Officials "helping" miscreants to dump waste material in forest areas | | Forest deptt in its deep slumber | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 9: In what could be described as virtual failure of Forest department in checking a menace prevailing under its purview, miscreants are "openly" using forest areas as dumping grounds for disposing waste building materials collected from the municipal limits. The sensitive issue has further brought severe criticism against the officials of Forest department on helm of affairs, from the city residents especially the morning walkers as they question why the menace is not being dealt with iron hands. "The forest areas around the city outskirts here have become dumping grounds for disposing solid waste (Malba) following a ban by Irrigation and Flood Control department for dumping the same into River Ravi," revealed sources adding further that "in the absence of any kind of check, the owners of private Tractor Trolleys and Tipper Trucks seems to have identified forest areas as "safe places" for dumping the waste building materials." While none of the officials of Forest Department were available for comment, the Tractor Trolleys and Tipper Trucks loaded with waste building materials are being downloaded in late nigh hours all along Circular Road, Manda Forest and Raika Forest areas with impunity. "Who is here to catch us? There is no one to stop us in late night hours as they (officials) might be snoring in their bedrooms when we are on the job of dumping waste building materials," quipped one of Tractor Trolley operators on the condition of anonymity. "Furthermore astonishing fact is that number of Legislators, Ministers and even senior administrative officials daily travels on the said routes but no one could observe the menace which is causing grave environmental pollution," sources further revealed. "It is shame on the government. It reflects the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards such a sensitive issue. If it is openly happening right under the nose of the government here in the winter capital of the state one can imagine the state of affairs in other districts of the state," pointed out one of the morning walkers who regularly visit Circular road and Manda Forest areas in the morning hours. "Besides environment and pollution issue, the government must realize what kind of picture of our City of Temples is being viewed by the tourists who visit our state. Instead of presenting them with scenic beauty of our area, we are showing them waste materials lying all along the roadsides," expressed another morning walker. Will the government try to wake up from its deep slumber and act against the violators? |
