Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 11: In its Sunday Theatre Series, Natrang today staged Gursharan Singh's famous play 'Band Kamre' in Hindi at Natrang Studio Theatre. The play was directed by Anil Tickoo.
The story of the play goes like this, there is a very big house which is inhabited by just two people one husband who is physically disabled and his wife who is in control of all the affairs.
Though there are many rooms in the house but they use just one room as the wife believes that the room where someone has taken his last breath shall be kept reserved for the soul of that person. So, all the rooms are reserved for one or another relative who had died in the respective room. A turn comes in the mundane and monotonous life of the couple when 'Raji' niece of the wife is coming to live with her as she had lost her parents. The husband is of the belief that the rooms must be opened so that they could live in more air full of new thoughts but the wife is very rigid on her decision, she had some strong convictions which empower her to run the house authoritatively. 'Raji' had just entered her youth and after losing her parents, she was looking for a shoulder for emotional back up. Which she did not get from her aunt, though her uncle was much lenient and open minded but he could not share her loneliness. As the result of this she started looking the love and sympathy from a Professor who was her father's friend, who was married for the last eight years and who was much elder to her but she was too naïve to be practical. Her Aunt was much against this unacceptable relationship but the Uncle, having very liberal thoughts was not much offensive. But kneeling under the pressure of his wife, Professor steps back from the relationship which was so unbearable for 'Raji' that she committed suicide. And as the custom of the house, the only room left also is going to be reserved for the soul of 'Raji' resulting the couple to live rest of their life in kitchen. Every character, every incident and every statement in this play was metaphorical and contained much hidden meaning which relates to the life of all of us.
Rahul Singh as 'Husband' and Sajra Qadir as 'Wife' both national scholars acted their roles with professional touch.
They were equally supported by Ashwani Bali as 'Professor' and Anita Dhar as 'Raji'.
