JAMMU, Nov 11: Congress is likely to seek its pound of flesh from National Conference in the upcoming elections for four seats of Legislative Council from the quota of Panchayat members. The elections are to be held on December 3.
In the three hour long meeting of Congress legislature party held at Engineers Institute Gandhinagar here today, sources said that MLAs, Ministers and MLCs unanimously opined in favour of seeking one seat from Jammu region and one from Kashmir valley from NC. Though the predominant view was in favour of not contesting elections with National Conference yet leaders agreed to obey instructions from party high command.
Sources said that Haj and Auqaf Minister Aijaz Ahmed Khan alongwith PHE Minister Taj Mohi-ud-din opined on contesting all the four seats of Legislative Council from the quota of Panchayat members. Khan and Taj unanimously said that Congress has enough numbers to win all the four seats, sources said. They added that JKPCC President assured the Congress leaders of conveying their opinion to the Coalition Coordination Committee (CCC) during its meeting.
National Conference and Congress are meeting tomorrow to discuss the strategy for contesting the upcoming polls to four Legislative Council seats reserved for Panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir. State Congress president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, who is the chairman of CC has called the meeting on Monday at Jammu on the request of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
This is for the first time in past more than three decades that the four Panchayat seats reserved for Panchayats would be filled up in the Upper House. Two seats each are reserved for Kashmir and Jammu regions. The polls would be held on December 3, the notifications for which were issued on Friday.
The results will be declared on December 8. Around 35000 Sarpanchs and Panchs will form the Electoral College for these elections. Each of the Panchayat members would cast two votes in their respective divisions. Two candidates each in both the divisions securing highest number of votes would be declared the winner.
Meanwhile, the two committees- one each in Jammu and Kashmir divisions- set up by the Soz to recommend measures for implementation of the provision of 73rd amendment in the Panchayati Raj Act were finalizing the assigned task.
