| Bashir Magray of Congress withdraws from House Panel | | Chairman to decide fate of panel today | | Bashir Assad JAMMU, Nov 11: After National Conference having withdrawn its legislators, Khalid Najib Suharwardy and Bashir Ahmad Veeri from the House Committee investigating charges of forest land grab against Taj Mohi-ud-din followed by the withdrawal of Bashir Ahmad Magray of Congress, the credibility of the committee has come under shadow and if the sources are to be believed, Chairman Legislative Council is likely to dissolve the house panel tomorrow. Bashir Ahmad Magray of Congress today reportedly decided to withdrew from the panel and the same was conveyed to the chairman LC, Amrit Malhotra by the member this afternoon. With the resignation of Magray, the strength of the panel has been reduced to two legislators viz Murtaza Khan of PDP and Rafiq Shah of Panthers Party. Rafiq Shah is the complainant while as Murtaza Khan was nominated as chairman of the 5 member panel. Though the chairman of Legislative Council, Amrit Malhotra has been maintaining that the panel was legally valid, however, with the reported resignation of Magray from the panel, the validity of the panel has come under shadow which suggests that the chairman is left with no option but to dissolve the panel. However, Chairman Legislative Council, Amrit Malhotra denied having received any communication from Magray regarding his decision of having withdrawn from the panel. "No it is not true, he has not resigned, and these are just rumors," Malhotra told Early Times on phone. When asked whether he will quash the house panel on account of the withdrawal of the NC legislators from the panel, Malhotra said that he will take a final call over the fate of the panel by Monday morning. "I will scrutinize the records once again tomorrow at 11:30 and by 12 noon will let you know about the decision," Malhotra said. However, Bashir Magray could no be contacted on phone for his comments while as Murtaza Khan did not pick up the phone despite repeated calls. It merits a mention here that Minister for Medical Education and Leader of the Legislative Council, RS Chib had earlier requested the chairman to quash the panel on the grounds that a probe panel cannot be constituted against a Minister and the panel as such was not legally valid. However, chairman had taken exception to what he termed "extending privilege and protective cover to Taj" by the members of the House. While making it clear the other day that he had no doubts over the legality of his action on constituting the House Committee to go into the charges of alleged land grab by Taj, Amrit Malhotra in his communication to Minister for Medical Education RS Chib had stated; "I want to make it clear that am supposed to take decisions on the basis of record and evidence brought before me and on being satisfied about the need and necessity of taking a particular decision. I, while constituting the House Committee, had no doubt about my incompetence or illegality of my action. There was, and there is, no reason for seeking anybody's advice in the matter. Suggestions for seeking legal advice in the matter are unsolicited and unwelcome." |
