| Congress contesting one LC seat from Kashmir | | On backfoot, NC high command 'surrendering' political space to ally | | early times report Jammu, Nov 20: In the mutual agreement 'trick' played by the ruling coalition partners NC and Congress for the ensuing LC polls, it is the NC which is being seen at the receiving end and a big loser in the long term innings of politics it has been playing in Kashmir Valley. By allowing Congress to contest one seat from Kashmir Valley in this agreement, NC has virtually surrendered its own political space to the Congress , which hitherto it (NC) would not agree to leave at any cost, the space being the valued and crucial in the game of Kashmir politics in which only regional and Valley based parties are dominant players. Highly placed sources in the National Conference said some senior leaders in the party are not pleased with the idea and move the high command played this time by entering into agreement with Congress that facilitated Congress' smooth sway in Kashmir, in this context allowing Congress to accommodate a senior leader from Kashmir Valley to get a berth in the Upper House. They see it as a move, which no matter would give some dividends to the party in some ways for this poll , but it has played such a move which would prove counterproductive, rather disastrous for the party interests in the long run. Sources said the NC leaders who are well aware of the consequences of each move which NC , particularly Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is making under pressure of coalition partner or while following the spirit of coalition dharma, is actually causing more harm than any good to the party. It is for the first time NC has agreed and allowed any party to 'occupy' and grab the political space which it has never parted , not even at the cost of annoying Congress earlier on many occasions. However, political observers and rivals of the party are viewing at this 'agreement' a compulsion for NC High command in the backdrop of the reality that their party has lost ground and mass base and support in Kashmir Valley considerably. It is this realization of this lost ground that NC leadership decided to leave one seat for Congress in Kashmir Valley , no matter in its turn it got a space in Jammu where it has put up a woman candidate from Poonch district. Observers see this step, taken for the first time as NC admitting its weak political condition that it cannot contest nor win on its own without the support of Congress , which is gradually expanding its base by such 'tactics' in Kashmir Valley. By 'surrendering' the political space to Congress for this poll, NC high command has committed two major blunders, say the political pundits . One that it has openly admitted it cannot go alone in any poll, something which that has sent a wrong and dismal picture about party's political health down the hierarchy and cadres. Second , it has set a wrong precedent for future which might eventually become a a matter of 'policy' for them to allow Congress to grab and occupy its own political space in Valley, as Congress henceforth would not stop moving ahead and seeking such spaces in time to come , be it at the time of Assembly elections or Parliament polls. |
