| ‘Youth persecuted for green clothes, Kamaal is free’ | | Why this dichotomy? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 20: On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr a Srinagar youth was taken into custody for wearing green and white clothes. The Pakistani flag, it may be mentioned, has a similar combination of colours. The Jammu & Kashmir Police Kay Janbaaz Sipahi (brave soldiers of JK Police) took the youth into custody. He was beaten as well. The incident evoked sharp reaction from People's Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti. The youth was let off after some time but a message was conveyed. The police was more than `vigilant' to prevent such acts of `treason'. The National Conference additional general secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal while addressing a function at Kishtwar last Sunday said India was an enemy as it had rejected a no war pact offer from Pakistan. He also criticized Army for the second time. Earlier, he saw Army hand in a hand grenade attack in the summer capital. s taken into custody for wearing green and white clothes. Surprisingly the statements were ignored. No action was taken. Had a commoner made such a statement, the police would have detained him under PSA. Is law meant for lesser mortals only? Or, is Kamaal special? Of course he is an MLA and enjoys some privileges but can he make a statement against the country? Kamaal's statement has evoked widespread ridicule and condemnation. Major political parties including Congress, BJP and PP have demanded stern action against the erring NC leader. The former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad while rejecting Kamaal's explanation also sought penal action against him. The Kishtwar unit of the BJP has sought registration of FIR against him. Till date their demand has not been met. This dichotomy has to stop somewhere. Reports from Kashmir suggest that such machinations no longer strike a chord there. If Kamaal, or for that matter NC wants to project a separatist face of the organization by issuing such statements, they are mistaken. For the sake of democracy and rule of law, political and legal experts have sought action against Kamaal for his infamous statement. "If government cannot book him under relevant provisions of law, then all political prisoners who have been detained for similar stuff must be released", they made it clear.
