| Why does Omar Abdullah want to break loose from Sheikh legacy? | | | Early TImes Report
Jammu, Jan 28: State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statement trying to distance himself from the legacy of his grand father, late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah is definitely going to create front page news in the days to come. In an interview to a Srinagar based news agency Omar Abdullah said he wants to develop a second line of leadership for the NC and is also looking forward to a day when the NC is headed by someone not belonging to the Abdullah family. Later speaking to the current affairs news programme of Radio Kashmir Srinagar Omar Abdullah said he does not believe in legacy and would be seeking people's support and votes based on his person and personal performance. He also said some people were still coming to him and claiming to have worked with his grand father and therefore wanted to continue in the government. The reference was obvious and did not need any clarification regarding who the Chief Minister was speaking about. Any political observer would agree that the NC like the Congress at the centre is largely and predominantly a dynasty based political party. The NC revolves round and still draws all its strength from the fact that the party was founded by late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah whose contributions may be contested by many, but cannot be denied at all. The Chief Minister's belief that he can break loose of the Sheikh legacy is perhaps based on the fact that recent successes have started directing the future course for the Chief Minister. All said and done, hardly anybody in Jammu and Kashmir doubts the fact that Omar Abdullah stands on the Sheikh dynasty and his biggest credential even today is that he is the grandson of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and the son of Dr. Farooq Abdullah. Omar's friend and the Vice President of the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi does not deny the fact that he is carrying on the legacy of his father, grand mother and great grand father. Facts of history cannot be denied and any attempt to deny them is liable to boomerang. The rank and file of the ruling NC still seriously believes along with the people of Jammu and Kashmir that Omar Abdullah's biggest claim to power is his family legacy. Trying to grow out of the shadow of his father and grand father is something nobody can deny the Chief Minister, but breaking loose from the legacy could cost him dearly. |
