EARLY TIMES REPORT

Jammu, Jan 28: Acting on the complaints of Consumers, a team of the officers of Legal Metrology Department today conducted detailed inspection of M/S Chaccha Di Hatti at Raj Tilak road and found discrepancies in violation of rules with regard to MRP fixed on the Chinese made shoes and price charged from the consumers. Meanwhile another trader was issued show cause notice. The team led by Joint & Deputy controllers (Enforcement) raided the shop following a complaint of consumer, alleging that was charged Rs 800 for ladies shoe whereas the MRP written by the manufacturer was very less i.e Rs 295 incl of all taxes .The team on inspection found that the complaint was genuine and asked the trader to produce the purchase bill which the owner could not produce on the spot. After going in details, it was revealed that all such products which come under the imposition of 13.5% VAT are being billed at lower rate to save tax but the hapless consumers are being fleeced by charging at exorbitant rates at the will of the trader. The Inspector LM Jammu (U) Ms Pooja Kumari seized all the deceptive Chinese shoes and trader was directed to produce all the bills from the wholesalers so as to ascertain the actual price billed to the retailer. According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology yet in another case to address another complaint from the different complainant, the team issued notice to the owner of renowned garment showroom at City Square Mall for adopting restrictive trade practices to fleece the consumers. The said trader was issuing Gift Vouchers @ 10% of the total value of the purchase to the consumers with the restriction that the said gift vouchers can be encashed for particular segmented items but the consumer was entitled to purchase anything worth that value of his choice. The owner was asked to show cause why the complaint may not be lodged to the appropriate Court in terms of section 10(d) of Consumer Protection Act 1987.
