PG Arts becomes inter-college cricket champion
1/30/2013 11:26:50 PM
early times report
JAMMU, Jan 30: The combined side of Post Graduate (PG) Departments of Arts today emerged as new champion of the Inter-college Twenty20 Cricket Tournament which was organised by the Department of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, here.
In the title clash, PG Arts registered an impressive 70 runs win over PG Law and Sciences in the final, courtesy superb innings played by skipper, Sunil Sharma.
Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, PG Arts set a challenging target of 184 runs for the loss of eight wickets, which, in reply, PG Law and Sciences could not chase and the whole side bowled out for 113 runs in 18.3 overs.
Sunil Sharma played skipper's innings contributing highest 79 (off 54 balls, 8x4, 2x6) runs while Taqdir Singh (31off 22 balls, 5x4) and Chander Kiran (28 off 23 balls, 2x4, 1x6) played fine innings. Rahul Sharma added 10-ball 19 runs. From PG Law and Sciences, Rahul Bandral and Gokul Baru shared two wickets each while Ajay took one.
Batting second, PG Law and Sciences lost all their wickets for 113 runs in 18.3 overs. Gokul Baru remained top scorer with 33 runs, followed by Sheroz, who contributed 13-ball 21 runs. Rahul Bandral made 18 runs. Dilawar Singh and Sunil Dutta bowled brilliant spells and took two wickets each. Amit and Sukhvinder shared apiece each. Today's match was officiated by Raman Kumar and Saleem-ur-Rehman as umpires while Manu Khajuria was scorer.
In the final, Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies.
Unbecoming behavior What the combined side of PG Law and Sciences did today was against the spirit of sports, especially in the gentlemen's game of cricket. First, the `high headed' side kept their counterparts from PG Arts wait for three hours for the game to resume at 12.30 pm against the scheduled time of 9.30 am. Later, they were reluctant to continue with the game after they found it hard to chase the target.
The side virtually brought the game to a halt with the pretext of bad light with score on board 75 for five in 12 overs. But to their dismay, the Sun, which was hiding behind the haze, suddenly appeared.
On the other hand, finding PG Law and Sciences adamant not to resume the game, the offended PG Arts skipper, Sunil Sharma even offered to hand them over the winning trophy. Ashamed with the true spirit of sports shown by their opponents, PG Law and Sciences, at last, sent the batsmen in.
Earlier, the efforts on part the Director Sports, Prof Bhau to convince the team go waste. However, at the end, Director was thankful to the PG Law and Sciences for completing the game.
Unsuccessful attempt After spoiling the annual inter-college cricket tournament for three times in the last four years, the PG Law and Sciences this time could not succeed in their plan to spoil the event.
Every time, the Law students did not allow the tournament to complete, especially when they found it difficult to win the title. But, this time, they were facing another PG side and most of the members of the teams were known to each other.
