33 percent population infected with Hepatitis C, admits Minister

ANANTNAG, Feb 3 : Besides Minister for Haj and Auqaf, Peerzada Mohammad Syed who visited Magam in Kokernag today, a team of experts from National Centre for Diseases and Control (NCDC) accompanied by Director Health Services (DHS) Kashmir, arrived in hepatitis C virus affected Takia Magam Kokernag area of South Kashmir's Anantnag District and took stock of the situation. " Talking to media persons during his visit to the area, Minister said "At least 33 percent population of the village is infected with the viral infection. We have sought assistance from the union health ministry to control the epidemic and for the treatment of the infected populace. Union health minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad has assured every possible support and assistance with regard to controlling the epidemic and treatment of the people having acquired the infection,". He said that the state government is taking all the measures to treat the infected people and stop the secondary infection. "There is no need to panic. We are trying to control the spread of the infection on war footing basis. Various teams of doctors are camping in the area for last many days to educate the people about the do's and don'ts to be adopted," minister said. He also announced the setting up of primary health centre (PHC) for the village. Meanwhile the team of experts from NCDC which reached the area in the morning issued instructions to the local doctors and Para-medicos camping in the area as to how to deal with the situation.
"The team instructed the local doctors about the immediate measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the secondary infection," said an official of the health department. He said that the team will stay in the area for three days. "The team of experts will be using all the latest and scientific methods to find out the exact source of the virus and track the same," he said. He said that the health department has so far collected 1600 samples from the village for testing. "Besides taking samples from the village we will start collecting samples from the adjoining villages also to ascertain whether the infection has not spread to those areas too," said another official.
