EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Feb 3 : Notwithstanding the chilling winters and intense cold thrown life in Kashmir out of gear, more so when erratic power supply haunts the residents, the political parties here are very active in rejuvenating their cadres at various levels.
People in large numbers come out to attend her functions in extreme cold conditions.
The other day she addressed a workers rally at Ashmuqam in Pahalgam constituency, Sunfday she was in Home-shalibugh. While the overwhelming response to PDP programs in several parts of the valley gives sleepless nights to the coalition partners but interestingly if any body is unhappy with these public interactions it is the MLAs of PDP who have to stay back doing preparations in their respective constitutions for public meetings scheduled to be addressed by PDP president.
Meanwhile lobbying among the leaders of political parties to get a berth in the Legislative Council (LC) has started as eight seats are falling vacant shortly.
The term of Devinder Singh Rana, Mohammad Yousuf Taing, R S Chib, Naresh Gupta, Mohammad Amin Bhat, Haji Ali Mohammad Bhat, Murtaza Ahmad Khan and Choudhary Nizam-ud-Din Khatana is coming to an end.
Out of the eight vacancies, four belong to Kashmir region, presently held by Mohammad Yousuf Taing, Amin Bhat, Ali Bhat and Nizam-ul-Din Khatana and three to Jammu region and held by R S Chib, Devinder Singh Rana and Murtaza Khan. One seat held by Naresh Gupta of Congress is reserved for Doda district.
Sources said the assembly secretariat has written to Election Commission of India about the names of the council members whose term is expiring and the commission will announce the election date any time.
In the upper house, there are only five council members from the opposition including four from PDP and one from NPP. Three of them belong to National Conference-Congress coalition.
Sources said that leaders of National Conference, Congress and various other political leaders have started lobbying to ensure their berth in the council.
They said National Conference is likely to repeat Devinder Rana and PDP will repeat Murtaza Khan from Jammu.
They said PDP may also field Peer Muhammad Hussain from Kashmir. However, the sources also added that few among the outgoing members in the National Conference and Congress can retain their berth in the council.
