Srinagar, Mar 18 : The construction of Tehzeeb Mahal adjacent to the State Transport bus yard has been perceived as an ill conceived project by transporters. The proposed project, transporters believe, will occupy 1/3 of the space of the transport yard and thus lessen the parking space.
They will it difficult to park around 150 vehicles once the project comes up. Talking to ETP the drivers said that their parking space has been restricted. "We have to park the vehicles on the road side which ultimately most of the times creates traffic jams", they said. Transporters also said that the area witnesses a huge rush of vehicles throughout the day and at the same time road sides are being most of the times occupied by the auto rickshaws, passenger vehicles leaving for Jammu and under such circumstances parking their own vehicles on road now a days has irked them.
The drivers expressed dismay over government's failure to provide an alternative yard. According to the details received only one Kanal of land has been kept for the transport yard while rest of the land will be consumed by the Tahzeeb Mahal, which according to the transporters could have been constructed somewhere else.
"We wonder now how we can manage the traffic rush during the time of Amarnath Yatra ji yatra when all the vehicles are pressed in to service and this space remains filled with vehicles along the season" said one official of SRTC. When transporters raised the matter with the authorities, they were told to park some of the vehicles at Pampore SRTC workshop. "This is not a wise suggestion. It is costly and time consuming", they said.
