| Govt will provide all requisite facilities for producing quality saffron: Mir | | Incentive cheques worth Rs.67 lakhs distributed among Srinagar saffron growers | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 28: Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir called for focused attention towards enhancing production & productivity of Saffron, as there is great demand for Kashmiri Saffron both in domestic as well as worldwide. The Minister was addressing saffron growers after distributing Rs. 67 lakhs among 133 saffron growers of district Srinagar, who have participated this year in rejuvenation of saffron corms under “National Mission on Saffron” at Lal Mandi Srinagar. He said that Government would provide all requisite facilities to the growers for producing quality saffron in the State. Mr. Mir advised farmers to adopt intensive production technology in saffron to bring back pristine glory of this heritage industry of Jammu & Kashmir. He also advised growers to avail the benefits of National Mission on Saffron & cooperate with Agriculture department for successful implementation. He said that Spice Park & Quality Control Lab under the Mission at village Dusoo being set up that would provide online national & international market facilities to the growers, besides provide quality control facilities to them. Director Agriculture Kashmir, Mr. Mushtaq Peerzada said that objective of National Mission on Saffron is to revive the saffron cultivation on modern lines by way of providing latest technical knowhow incentives for adopting mechanization & irrigation to the saffron growers. He said that during this year 924 hectares of land have been brought under replanting of corms & for strengthening of irrigation system, out of 124 bore wells 61 were constructed at the cost of Rs. 7.30 crores & 100 Vermi Compost Units were established for which Rs. 30 lakhs as incentive were provided to growers. He said that under Mission 50 percent subsidy is being provided for purchase of Weeders & Hot Air Dryers for saffron growers. Chief Agriculture Officer, Srinagar, Mr. G.M. Rather gave a detailed resume of implementation of National Mission on Saffron and said that under 162 hectares of traditional saffron grown area of district Srinagar. He said that 78 hectares have been covered under rejuvenation and replanting of corms. The participated farmers appreciated the extension efforts of the department and expressed satisfaction about the implementation of National Mission on Saffron. Among others, Director Command Area Development, Joint Director Agriculture Extension, Project Coordinator Mushroom & other concerned district officers & officials were present. |
