| Students real ambassadors of Healthy India: Shabir | | World Health Day celebrated in Jammu | | Jammu: Minister of State for Health (Independent Charge), Mr. Shabir Ahmad Khan has said that World Health Day is an occasion to raise public awareness on hypertension disease that is treatable and preventable and yet has spread to epidemic proportions and continues to kill millions of people each year, especially in the developing countries. The Minister said the theme of World Health Day 2013 " Hypertension” lends immediacy to the mission to heart blood pressure and underlines the fact that everyone can make it his or her responsibility to eliminate the deadly disease from the face of the earth in the foreseeable future. He said the day offers an opportunity to focus on blood pressure related problems and solutions and to support worldwide efforts to control Hypertension. Addressing a public gathering on the observance of World Health Day at Lawrence Public School Sidhra, Jammu, organized by Health Department in collaboration of the School Management, the Minister said that every year World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization [WHO] on this day in 1948 and each year a theme is selected for this observance that highlights a priority public health concern across the world and this year’s theme is focused on hypertension. The Minister said that it is essential that detection and control of high blood pressure (measurement, health advice and treatment), are coupled with simultaneous reduction of other risk factors that cause heart attacks and strokes, such as diabetes and tobacco use. He said there should be core elements of primary health care in all countries, and integral efforts to reduce the growing burden of communicable diseases. The Minister said that fortunately, high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. In some developed countries, prevention and treatment of this condition, together with other cardiovascular risk factors, has brought about a significant reduction in deaths due to heart disease, he added. The Minister said that controlling high blood pressure, together with other risk factors, is the main way to prevent heart attack and stroke. He said the risk of developing high blood pressure can be minimized by: cutting down on salt; eating a balanced diet; avoiding harmful use of alcohol; getting regular exercise; and avoiding tobacco use, to encourage adults to check their blood pressure and to follow the advice of their health care professionals. The Minister stressed upon the concerned authorities to organize awareness camps especially in remote and hilly areas for encouraging self-care to prevent high blood pressure. The Minister appreciated the students, staff and Management of Lawrence Public School for organizing such programme. He also appreciated the confidence of students and said that they are the, adding that Nations’ progress depends on the health of its youth. He said that we have to involve the youth in such awareness programmes as they are the future builders of the State. On the occasion, the Health Minister also inaugurated free medical camp, organized by the Health Department Jammu. The students of the School on the occasion presented an extravagant programme which included cultural items, skit on stress related problems, importance of herbs, slogans and awareness symposium, which was highly appreciated by the audience.
