Visits slum basties in Udhampur, reviews implementation of Horticulture schemes

JAMMU : Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture Mr. Raman Bhalla today said that the slum basties in six districts of Jammu, Kathua, Srinagar, Anantnag, Udhampur and Baramulla would be developed with modern line facilities under Rajiv Awas Yojna (RAY), adding that in this connection Housing Department has submitted a detailed project report to central Government for funding after conducting an extensive survey in these districts.
This was stated by the Minister while interacting with the slum dwellers during his visit to Sail Salan and Sangoor slum basties of Udhampur district, here today. MLA, Mr. Balwant Singh Mankotia, Managing Director Housing Board Mr. Kiran Wattal, Director Horticulture Mr. Anil Kumar Sharma, Director Horticulture (P&M) Mr. A R Natnoo besides other senior officers of Revenue, Horticulture and Housing Departments accompanied the Minister.
Mr. Bhalla said Government has identified about 300 households with 5770 population residing in slum basties of Sail Salan and Sangoor villages of the district for extending benefits to them under the scheme. He assured the inhabitants that the basties would be developed with all basic amenities under RAY at par with the urban pockets like road connectivity, safe drinking water, electricity, education, health besides better lanes and drains. He said Government was keen to redress the problems of slum dwellers in a definitive manner under RAY scheme. He said Central and State Governments were committed to improve the living condition of homeless in the State. He said under RAY Government would provide dwelling units, comprising one-room, kitchen and toilet accommodation to each household. Later, the Minister also visited Battal-Ballain and inspected 1173 kanal proposed site for establishment of Housing Colony in the area.
Interacting with the people, Mr. Bhalla informed that instructions have been issued to Housing Board for early payment of compensation to the owners whose land has been acquired for the purpose. He said Government was keen to develop new colonies as per the master plan under self financing schemes. He stressed the need to put the assets of the board to best use to generate revenue. He said development of Housing colonies in urban as well as in rural areas of the State was receiving main focus of the Government. He said the colonies would be developed on modern lines with all basic amenities like safe drinking water, road connectivity, electricity, parking, playfield, super bazaar and recreational parks.
Earlier, the Minister inspected various Horticulture projects presently under implementation in Udhampur district.
Mr. Bhalla also inspected Mango, Citrus and Lime orchards, besides poly green houses, vermin compost units, diesel irrigation sets, shallow bore wells, established by the department at various locations under Centrally Sponsored Schemes viz Horticulture Mission for North and East and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
The Minister interacted with the fruit growers, farmers at different locations and advised them to frequently interact with the field functionaries of the department so that they can get maximum benefit of the incentives available under various state and centrally sponsored schemes presently under implementation in the State. He further advised them to adopt Horticulture in a big way as the district has huge potential and is best suited for the cultivation of different types of fruit crops. During the visit to different areas, Mr. Bhalla was briefed that an area of 486 ha. Has been covered under different kinds of fruit crops under Area Expansion Programme , which includes 1900 sq meter area brought under protected cultivation, 5200 sq meter area under shade net houses. He as further told that 20 vermin compost units were established, 15 ha. Area was brought under rejuvenation of old and senile orchards, 165 no. of farmers were trained under the component training of farmers, 524 farmers sent on the exposure visit programme, 180 no. of manually operated sprayer were distributed to the farmers on subsidized cost in the district. Later, the Minister visited Fruit and Vegetable Market established at Kallar in Udhampur district and reviewed the facilities being provided by the Horticulture Planning and Marketing department to the traders.
Responding to the traders demands, Mr. Bhalla asked the officers to install street lights, besides construct drinking water reservoir with tap facilities for the convenience of traders.
The Minister called upon the concerned officers to motivate the growers and traders to ensure that quality fruit and vegetables were brought to the market, adding that in this era of competition the quality control is must and “We have to focus on this vital area to maintain the credibility of State’s horticulture produce”. Mr. Bhalla stressed on exploring new markets to promote State’s horticulture products. He said horticulture was the mainstay of the state’s economy and all out efforts will be made to promote this vital sector.
