| Coordination between SKUAST, extension departments vital for sustainability in Agriculture: Mir | | | SRINAGAR : Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir today said that Agriculture universities and extension departments have to make coordinated efforts for bringing sustainability in agriculture sector with introduction of farmer friendly research programmes. The Minister said this while addressing a one- day State Level Joint Committee Meeting of Agriculture universities & Extension agencies held here this afternoon. The Minister said that the need of the hour is to bring greater synergy between Research and Extension fields of agriculture universities and Extension Departments to address the issues confronting the farming community at the field level. He said that the state lagged behind in agriculture innovations in past because the stake holders of agriculture and its allied sectors worked in isolation adding that as soon as “I resume the charge of Agriculture Ministry, every step have been taken to bring all the stake holders on one platform and this has helped the farmers in enhancing production, productivity and its marketing”. Mr Mir said that the objective of holding the joint meetings of various fields of agriculture universities and the extension departments of the State Government was to ensure greater interactions to give impetus to research and extension activities so that difficulties confronting farming community at the field level are resolved. He said this would help the researchers to go for need based and areas specific research and would help the stake holders in the agriculture sector to boost the agriculture activities as per the aspiration of farming community. Appreciating the role of two agriculture universities of the State in different fields of agriculture and its allied sectors, the Minister called upon them to enhance coordination between KVK’s, and extension departments adding that much more research needs to be done in certain some specific areas like saffron, horticulture, apiculture etc. in which J&K can lead the country at national and global level. Saying the global warming has affected whole world, Mr Mir asked the researchers to produce such varieties that will require less irrigation for cultivation besides having better yield and quality to thrive in today’s competitive market world over. He said that “farmers are working hard to achieve maximum out of agriculture profession adding that it is the duty of universities to introduce such varieties which are low volume and high cost. He said this would help to make agriculture an economically viable activity which would help to motivate the educated youth to opt it as means to earn their livelihood in a dignified manner. Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K, Prof. Teij Partap, Commissioner Secretary Agriculture Production, Dr. Asgar Samoon, Director Resarch SKUAST-K, Mohammad Shafiq Wani, Director CSWRI Avkinagar, Director Extension SKUAST-K, Dr. Afiefa Kamali, Director Agriculture, Jammu, Mr Ajay Khujuria , Director Agriculture, Kashmir, Peerzada Mushtaq Ahmad, Director Sericulture, Mr. Dhanvir Singh, MD J&K Agro Industries Corporation, Abdul Majeed Bhat and other senior officers of SKUAST-K, ICAR and extension departments were present in the meeting. |
