SRINAGAR : Emphasizing the utility of credible source of information on demography, economic activity, sex ratio, literacy and education besides other socio-economic parameters in the planning and development of the State, the Primary Census Abstract shall be of paramount importance in devising tangible targets to ensure progress and prosperity. This was stated by the Joint Chief Principal Census Officer, J&K, Mr. C.S. Sapru while releasing the Primary Census Abstract containing data of Census-2011 during a press conference held here today. Mr. Sapru said that census is not only the basis for reviewing the progress in the past decade but also helps in monitoring the ongoing schemes, besides planning for the future. This is the only source of primary data which provides valuable information for planning and formulation of projects for the development of the State. Highlighting the main features of the Primary Census Abstract the Joint Chief Principal Census Officer informed that the total population of J&K has increased from 1,01,43,700 to 1,25,41,302 during the last decade, showing a growth rate of 23.64 percent while the percentage of urban population has increased from 24.8 to 27.4 percent. It was also revealed that the child population within the age group of 0-6 years has increased by 16.10 percent recording the highest percentage of this age group in Kupwara and Budgam districts upto 21.69 percent and 20.59 percent respectively, while the lowest ratio of child population was recorded in Leh district. The overall child sex ratio has decreased from 941 to 862 from 2001 to 2011, adding that the highest sex ratio of 977 has been recorded in Kargil district while the lowest child sex ratio was recorded in Samba district. Mr. Sapru during PowerPoint presentation also deliberated on the literacy rate, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and working population in the State. He informed that the literacy rate of the State has increased upto 67.2 percent with 76.8 percent for males and 56.4 percent for females. Adding that the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe population has increased upto 9,24,991 and 14,93,299 respectively, thereby raising the percentage ratio of Scheduled Tribe population from 10.9 percent to 11.9 percent. Regarding the working population the ratio of workers has decreased from 34.5 percent in 2011 as against 37 percent in 2001. However, the ratio of marginal workers has increased said the Joint Chief Principal Census Officer. |
