Lucknow, June 10 : In the last 48 hours, more than 50 policemen have been found involved in the most heinous crimes like murder, train robbery and bribery.
Sanjay Rai, an inspector in Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in Lucknow, has been booked for killing Maaz, a 12-year-old relative of a trainee woman sub-inspector. He decided to kill a member of her family and implicate her in the case when she tried to severe her relation with him. Rai hired two contract killers who gunned down the boy on May 28. But his involvement was established after the arrest of the killers from Azamgarh on Sunday late night.
It also exposed the deep rooted police-criminal nexus as Sanjay Rai had asked Sandeep Rai, a hard core criminal serving life-term in jail, to provide him the contract killers. The absconding inspector had paid Rs.2.50 lakh for the job.
In another case, eight policemen including a sub-inspector have been booked for their involvement in cattle-smuggling in Nindru area of Bijnore district. Sub-Inspector Madhupal and his seven colleagues have also been suspended.
On Sunday late night, four Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel on duty in Satyagrah Express train robbed the passengers of AC-3. Ratnesh Pathak and Karamveer Rathi, two GRP constables have been arrested. The identification of the other two GRP men was yet to be ascertained.
In a more surprising incident, 39 constables were on dharna on Saturday and Sunday at Chitwaragaon thana in Ballia district for a reason which was enough to terminate them from service and put behind the bar. However an inquiry has been ordered. They were demanding equal share in the bribe which the Station House Officer Manoj Singh used to collect.
"He collects about Rs.5 lakh in the thana every month. But he keeps four lakh with himself and divides Rs.1 lakh in 39 constables. But we have told our seniors that we are on dharna against his behaviour", said a constable on the condition of anonymity.
But Superintendent of Police of Ballia, Omkar Singh said, "We have come to know about the reason behind the dharna and asked Circle Officer of Sadar Piyush Kumar Singh to conduct an inquiry", he said.
Exposing the system of his own department, Amitabh Thakur, an IPS officer (SP, Rules and Manuals) has written a letter to the department of home to protect Raghuraj Bhati, a sub-inspector posted in Muzaffarnagar from his own SSP Manjil Saini. Bhati had alleged that Saini has been misbehaving with him and creating obstructions on his way to checking crime in Meerapur police station, where he is posted.
Arun Kumar, ADG, Law and Order said, "Those policemen who are involved in crime or corruption would not be spared. The department has already initiated action against them."
But Brijesh Pathak, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP said, "There are goons and mafias running police stations in UP. The policemen posted at important police stations have turned out to be hard core criminals. Unfortunately, the state government is protecting them."
