KOLKATA, June 10 : Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee threw a challenge to the Trinamool Congress, saying that nobody can stop the Left Front from winning in the panchayat polls if free and fair elections are held.
Addressing a party gathering at Bongaon in North 24 Parganas on Sunday, Bhattacharjee said that the state was going through lawlessness and that the police was not giving protection to candidates during filing of nominations. "Can the elections be held? Trouble is occurring everywhere from the very beginning A few thousands of candidates could not file nominations in Burdwan, Birbhum, West Midnapore. The women candidates have even been beaten up. Those who have managed to file nominations are facing constant threats. Houses are being damaged and are being set on fire. Our government had conducted seven panchayat elections. Never any such trouble had occurred," he said. The former CM said that the panchayat elections have to be held ay any cost. "The panchayat elections have to be held at any cost, otherwise it will be huge loss for the people of the state. "The panchayats in Bengal have to be saved. It was for the panchayats that so many people have got land. They are trying to grab the panchayat from the poor people. This has to be stopped," Bhattacharjee said.
The former CM said that all the Left parties have joined together to fight in the elections. "We, the CPM, RSP, Forward Block all Left parties are together. We have decided to contest the panchayat polls together. If the elections are held properly, then they cannot win the panchayat elections. Nobody will be able to stop us," Bhattacharjee said, adding that the there has been a gain in the number of votes for the CPM in the recently held assembly by-polls in Howrah.
Bhattacharjee said that the government was not consulting with the state election commission to hold free and fair polls. "The SEC is saying one thing, the government is saying another thing. The government is not consulting with anybody. They are fixing everything from Writers' Buildings. But the panchayat is also the government," the former CM said.
