Samoon inspects agriculture, horticulture development activities in Rajouri district

JAMMU, June 16: Commissioner Secretary Agriculture Production Department, J&K, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon conducted tour of border district of Rajouri and reviewed the progress on various agriculture developmental activities and programmes launched under various Central and State sector schemes being implemented by Horticulture, Agriculture, Sericulture and Horticulture Planning and Marketing Departments.
Anil Kumar Sharma, Director Horticulture, Jammu, Ajay Khajuria, Director Agriculture, Jammu, M.L. Chadgal, Additional Director, Sericulture besides other Senior and District level officers of Horticulture, Agriculture, Horticulture (P&M) and Sericulture Departments accompanied the Commissioner.
The Commissioner reviewed the functioning and implantation of schemes and programmes and also interacted with farmers, fruit growers and inquired about the benefits they are getting from the concerned government agencies.
The Commissioner/Secretary was impressed with the high density Apple plantation, Apricot/Plum plantation in the District undertaken by the Department of Horticulture.
At Thanamandi, high density Apple plantation, water harvesting tank and vermi compost unit was highly appreciated by the visiting officer. He emphasised upon the Horticulture Department to lay thrust on development of stone fruits in Thanamandi area, as the area is best suited for its cultivation and has immense potential. He also visited various departmental and private fruit plant nurseries established under the guidance of Horticulture Department in Rajouri District.
Commissioner/Secretary also reviewed the progress of Horticulture, Agriculture Sector in a meeting held with the officers of Horticulture, Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture (P&M), Scientists of KVK at Rajouri. He also interacted with the progressive orchardists/ farmers/ Sarpanches and listened to their problems related to these Departments present in the meeting.
He directed the field functionaries of various Departments to have close liaison with the farming community and disseminate the latest technology to the farmers and make them aware about the various developmental schemes/ activities being undertaken by the respective departments and to readdress their genuine problems. Commissioner/ Secretary gave on spot instructions to officers/ officials of Horticulture (P&M) to make Fruit and Vegetable Mandi, Rajouri functional within one and half month positively so that problem in respect of marketing of Horticulture produce is solved.
Commissioner/ Secretary was apprised that an area of 242 ha. was covered under normal spacing, 6 ha. area was covered under high density fruit plantation, 1520 sq.mtr. protected cultivation, 9 No. of water resources created, 80 ha. under gap filling and 13 No. of vermi compost units established by the Department of Horticulture during 2012-13 in the District.
